Alcoa has proudly been a part of the Geelong community since 1963. After 51 years of operation, Alcoa made the difficult decision to close its Point Henry operations. The smelter ceased operation on 1 August 2014 and the rolling mill closed on 19 December 2014.
Underpinned by a strong commitment to health, safety and environmental management, Alcoa has commenced the decommissioning, remediation and future land planning of the site. These processes are closely interrelated and are expected to take three to five years. Community consultation and engagement continue to guide project activities.
