Reconciliation

Alcoa Australia acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the lands and pay respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging.

We are committed to understanding the rights, cultures, interests, and aspirations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. In the spirit of reconciliation, we aspire to build and maintain mutually beneficial and enduring relationships based on respect, meaningful engagement, and trust.

For more than half a century we have worked with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples where we operate across Australia. Our operations in Western Australia are on the lands of the Bindjareb people, the Whadjuk people and the Wardandi people of the Noongar nation. In Victoria, our operations are on the lands of the Gunditjmara people and the Wadawurrung people.

In 2020 we began our formal reconciliation journey when we launched our first Reconciliation Action Plan, grounded in our commitment to listening, walking with and working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Since then, we’ve broadened our engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, introduced cultural awareness training and embedded cultural protocols. We’re developing greater economic opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through new community investments and increased spend with Aboriginal owned businesses.

To build on these actions and steps we launched our second Reconciliation Action Plan in 2022. We consulted local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and our workforce and challenged ourselves to look more deeply into ways we can further strengthen relationships and enhance respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Our Reconciliation Action Plan emphasises our commitment to:

  • Engaging honestly and openly with Traditional Owners and Custodians.
  • Improving the cultural awareness of our workforce to provide a welcoming and supportive workplace for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Working with Traditional Owners and Custodians to better understand and demonstrate respect for the cultural significance of the lands on which we operate.
  • Sharing the value of our operations with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples by improving employment outcomes and increasing supplier diversity.
