Current Mining Operations at Huntly and Willowdale
Following a referral from a third party in 2023, the EPA decided to conduct an environmental assessment into parts of our existing mining operations at the Huntly and Willowdale Mines.
The WA Government has granted a conditional exemption that allows our current mining operations to continue while the EPA environmental assessment is conducted.
Key Project Information
The assessment includes parts of our 2022-2026 and 2023-2027 Mining Management Program which outlines our environmental studies and proposed exploration, mining and rehabilitation plans over these years.
The EPA has noted the need to have a bespoke approach to this assessment as it relates to previous and current mining operations.
This has meant that we have drawn upon our prior experience, existing knowledge and mitigation measures to outline our approach to managing impacts.
For more information about the assessment of Current Mining Operations at Huntly and Willowdale you can read the Project Overview Information Sheet.
Project Update
The assessment process commenced in late 2023. The proposal will be assessed at the highest level, being a Public Environmental Review. This included a 12-week public comment period.
Our Environmental Review Document (ERD) was submitted to the Environmental Protection Authority who have recently sought comment from the public. Alcoa will now work through all submissions received during this period and respond. We will also take the opportunity to review and revise the indicative project timeline leading up to the Ministerial decision.
You can learn more about our proposal and the way we will manage potential environmental impacts through the fact sheets below.
