Bushfire preparedness grants now open

Not-for-profit and grassroots organisations in communities where Alcoa operates in Western Australia and Victoria can now apply for grants through the 2026 Alcoa Bushfire Ready Fund, part of a $1.3 million commitment to strengthen community resilience to bushfire risk.
The program supports initiatives that improve preparedness, response capability and overall resilience to bushfires.
Eligible groups in Kwinana, Peel and the Upper South West in Western Australia and the Shire of Glenelg in Victoria can apply for grants of up to $20,000.
A $20,000 grant in 2025 allowed the South Yunderup Volunteer Bushfire Brigade to upgrade Command Trailer communications technology as well as mobile lights, a spotlight, siren and canopy on the fire boat.
Brigade volunteer Stephanie Newman, who works at Alcoa’s Wagerup Aluminium Refinery, said the grant ha made a tangible impact.
“There is no pumpable water on the islands which is a safety issue when you consider the high risks associated with sunburn and fatigue,” Ms Newman said.
“We are running 12-hour shifts, so getting enough food and water is critical, especially with the heat exposure.”
“Previously we were operating on two-way radios with no way of knowing what else was happening – so the centralised communications are a huge boost from a safety point of view.”
Ms Newman said having her employer’s backing to participate in volunteer activities was critical.
“This is where we work, but it is also where we live,” she said.
“We are really lucky to have the support of Alcoa to go out and volunteer in our communities. They support us when we have fires to fight.”
“I would encourage local brigades to apply – it has made a huge difference to our operational capacity in South Yunderup.”
Alcoa Australia President Elsabe Muller said eight bushfire brigades and an Aboriginal Ranger program had been supported through last year’s inaugural grant round.
“We are pleased and proud to support grassroots leadership and projects in communities where we operate,” Ms Muller said.
