Pedal for purpose

After partnering with Telethon last year, with a $50,000 working dog purchase as part of Kelpies for Kids, we are proud to be along for the ride again this year, supporting the 2025 Alcoa Cycle Challenge.

Taking place on Sunday, 19 October at Perth’s Telethon Family Festival, the eight-hour, non-stop cycling event is more than just a test of stamina – it is a powerful display of endurance, teamwork and heart all in support of sick, vulnerable and disadvantaged Western Australian children.

Training is well underway, and the excitement is building with ten teams from across Alcoa sites taking up the challenge and cycling throughout September and October to raise funds for Telethon.

Greg Hire - Cycle Challenge champion, basketball legend, and founder of mental health advocacy charity A Stitch in Time, recently rode his bike from Perth to Alcoa’s Pinjarra and Wagerup alumina refineries to inspire employees and share his powerful message about mental health.

“I am thrilled to be part of this fundraising journey and even more excited the Alcoa teams are taking up the challenge to support sick and vulnerable kids. Meeting refinery employees has been truly inspiring; and it is a powerful reminder of the difference we can make together,” Greg said.

“Doing the Alcoa Cycle Challenge is a continuation of Matty Fuller’s physical challenges and what a fantastic legacy he’s left Telethon.

“I think the greatest gift you can give is helping positively impact lives and I can do that through this - it’s a no brainer.”

Alcoa Australia President Elsabe Muller said Alcoa was thrilled to partner with Telethon to promote physical wellbeing and shine a light on the vital link between movement and mental health.

“We’re calling on the community to rally their friends, family and colleagues and ride with us to make a real difference for WA kids,” Elsabe said.

Funds raised will ensure more than 161 Telethon charity beneficiaries can continue to provide better access and quality of care as WA comes together to help build a better and brighter future for our children.
