Grants to Get Western Australia Bushfire Ready Now Open

Applications are now open for the Alcoa Bushfire Ready Fund - Grants Program to help regional communities in Western Australia and Victoria improve preparedness for bushfire and address the challenges of a changing climate.

Part of the $1.3 million Alcoa Bushfire Ready Fund, these annual competitive grants offer between $5,000 and $20,000 to not-for-profit community and grassroots organisations supporting the communities where Alcoa operates including Kwinana, Peel and the Upper South West in Western Australia and the Shire of Glenelg in Victoria.

Alcoa Australia President Elsabe Muller said the grants aim to assist communities, fire managers and other interest groups to find opportunities and remedy gaps they might have in their ability to prepare for and respond to bushfire events.

“We want to bolster the bushfire prevention and response strategies of the regional communities where we operate because they are particularly vulnerable to the devastation fire can cause,” Ms Muller said.

“The grants aim to help equip local communities with extra tools to manage risk and respond to bushfire threats.

“We also hope to empower fire managers including local bushfire brigades, local governments, not-for-profit community organisations and Traditional Owners to enhance collaboration in their response to bushfire events.”

Myalup Bush Fire Brigade Fire Control Officer Wayne Jackson said the broad structure of Alcoa’s Bushfire Ready Fund - Grants Program will enable regional communities to identify and address their specific unmet needs.

“Apart from things like firefighting and training equipment, these grants could fund aspects well beyond emergency response such as community outreach and education,” Mr Jackson said.

“We can’t assume people know what it means or what is required of them on days when there is a High, Extreme or Catastrophic fire danger rating, to understand or know how to prepare their own properties to reduce damage or loss, or have a family Bushfire Survival Plan to prepare for the unexpected.

“Organisations can get the funding they need to have those conversations, raise awareness and encourage people to take preventative action well before a bushfire occurs.”

These grants announced today form one part of the $1.3 million Alcoa Bushfire Ready Fund that also focuses on strategic partnerships, projects and research to mitigate risk and disaster relief efforts to support community and environmental recovery from bushfire.

Applicants for the Alcoa Bushfire Ready Fund - Grants Program must be not-for-profit and support the communities near where Alcoa operates in Western Australia and Victoria.

Alcoa Bushfire Ready Fund - Grant Program applications can be made via https://alcoa.smartygrants.com.au/25BushfireReadyFundGrants and close 5pm AWST on Monday 4 August 2025.
