Alcoa volunteers plant 1800 seedlings at The Spectacles

A group of employees from Alcoa’s Kwinana Refinery know ‘many hands make light work’ after spending a cold winter’s morning planting native seedlings at The Spectacles wetland reserve in the City of Kwinana.

Working with local volunteer group Friends of the Spectacles, the group planted 1800 seedlings indigenous to the area to help combat bushland degradation. They also saw firsthand the fruits of their labour from a previous planting day two years ago, where the seedlings have now flourished into young plants.

The Spectacles comprises of 360 hectares of natural bush and wetland and is a part of a chain of wetlands that make up the Beeliar Regional Park. It is home to 87 species of water and woodland birds, and birds of prey.

Kwinana Refinery Manager Mark Zaborowski said he acknowledged the importance of supporting the local environment and the important role volunteers play in keeping communities strong and connected.

“Alcoa is proud to be a supportive partner in our local communities and it is great to see we can make a real difference through events like planting days,” Mr Zaborowski said.

Friends of the Spectacles Coordinator Lynda Smith said they could not do what they do if it was not for the support of volunteers who give up their time to dig, plant and rejuvenate the significant site.

“The work the Alcoa volunteers did was a tremendous help towards achieving our target of planting 4500 plants in the ground this winter.

“We once again thank Alcoa for their continued commitment to help us rehabilitate the wetland area through activities such as re-vegetation, seed collection, propagation and weed control,” Ms Smith said.
