Trainees from all walks of life join Alcoa
Sixteen new trainees will boost their skills as they undertake 18 month process operator traineeships at Alcoa’s three alumina refineries in Kwinana and the Peel and South West regions of Western Australia.
More than 1500 people applied for the highly sought-after nationally accredited traineeships, which include TAFE studies and practical assessments and aim to widen participants’ career prospects at completion.
This year’s cohort have an extensive array of prior experience, leaving behind jobs as electricians, a disability employment advisor, tour operator, soil tester, hydro-blaster and even a police officer, to name a few.
Highlighting Alcoa’s commitment to diversity, new trainee Kayleigh Moeller from Halls Head is one of eight women among the group.
Kayleigh immigrated from the Netherlands four years ago and after trying her hand at different jobs decided to pursue a career with Alcoa as the company’s commitment to gender diversity had impressed her.
“I was so excited to land this traineeship at Kwinana refinery which will definitely grow my career prospects,” Kayleigh said.
“In the Netherlands I completed a management degree, and since arriving in Australia I have tried my hand as a winery worker, security guard on a Pilbara mine site and a local government community engagement officer.
“I am not afraid to try new things and I aspire to be a manager one day so I can motivate and lead a team of people; I think Alcoa will be the perfect place to seek out that opportunity.
“I am so looking forward to the challenges and experiences I’ll encounter over the next 18 months, it’s going to be great.”
Trainees will finish with a Certificate II and III in Process Plant Operations and will learn the operating skills needed to safely contribute at Alcoa’s alumina refineries.
Seven people from the Peel region, seven from suburbs south of Perth, and one each from the South West and Kwinana area secured traineeships.
