Local help at hand for coronavirus fallout

Additional food will be put on the table of people in need in the south-west of Western Australia thanks to the generous support of Linfox Logistics.

The logistics company has thrown its support behind a partnership between Alcoa Foundation and Foodbank WA to help people struggling to make ends meet due the COVID-19 pandemic.

Under the partnership, food hampers containing essential supplies are being made available in the communities near where Alcoa operates its two bauxite mines and three alumina refineries. This covers the local government area of Kwinana, Murray and Waroona and parts of Serpentine-Jarrahdale and Harvey. With its Perth head office in Hazelmere, Linfox has operations across Western Australia.

Every month for the rest of the year, Linfox will help transport food hampers to communities in the Kwinana, Murray and Serpentine-Jarrahdale areas. This support will enable more hampers to be provided to people in need. Overall, 2,330 hampers will be distributed through this partnership.

Linfox Resources and Industrial General Manager Gary Pyne said the company was pleased to be able to assist such a worthy cause.

“It’s about giving back during what is a really tough time,” Mr Pyne said. “We have been working with Alcoa for just over two years delivering consumables to its operation in the south-west of the state. This is a great opportunity to support our customer and the communities we jointly operate in.”

Alcoa Australia Corporate Affairs Director Jodie Read thanked Linfox for its contribution and Foodbank WA for coordinating these vital food supplies.

Foodbank WA CEO Greg Hebble said while the immediate health threat was subsiding, a growing number of people were finding themselves in a situation where they are unable to afford enough food to eat due to the economic fallout from the pandemic.

“We’re absolutely delighted that Linfox are assisting with monthly delivery of hampers to communities in need,” Mr Hebble said. “This is a fine example of local businesses pulling
together to help us support those that are struggling to put food on the table at this incredibly challenging time. Thanks to Alcoa Foundation and Linfox, we are able to provide more food to individuals and families in need, which is a fantastic result.”
