Alcoa volunteers making a difference in the community
Alcoa volunteers continue to make a difference in the local community, volunteering for around 40 non-profit organisations across the Shire of Murray and City of Mandurah in 2019.
As part of the Alcoa Volunteers program, about 350 Pinjarra Alumina Refinery employees volunteered around 1400 hours in the local health care, emergency services, education and recreation sectors.
Organisations that benefited ranged from Homestead for Youth and Pat Thomas House to Fishability Mandurah and K9 Recue.
The efforts of Alcoa’s Pinjarra Refinery employees helped bolster the broader 2019 Alcoa Volunteer program in the south-west of Western Australia, where the company’s bauxite mines and alumina refineries are located.
During 2019, about 1,100 Alcoa employees volunteered for more 4,200 hours to assist around 120 charities and community organisations stretching from the Kwinana area in the north to Greater Bunbury in the south.
Through Alcoa’s ACTION program (Alcoans Coming Together in Our Neighbourhoods), nearly $200,000 was also donated to charities and community organisations in recognition of the volunteer efforts of the company’s employees.
Alcoa’s Pinjarra Refinery Manager Mark Hodgson said that in the challenging economic climate, Alcoa’s volunteering program was more essential than ever.
“Recently we’ve seen a drop in resources for a lot of our local community organisations who are mostly volunteer based,” Mr Hodgson said. “Fortunately, our employees have stepped up to help them out during this challenging time.”
“Engagement with our communities is critically important to Alcoa and I am incredibly proud to see more of our employees getting out there to make a difference, sharing their skills and knowledge with our local community groups.”
