Three Rivers – One Estuary partnership thriving

Alcoa Foundation is proud to partner with Greening Australia on the Three Rivers Project, which focuses on improving the health of the Serpentine, Murray and Harvey rivers.

The three-year partnership, valued at around $500,000, supports on-ground projects such as bank stabilisation, weed removal and plantings. To celebrate World Rivers Day on Sunday 30 September, Greening Australia published a video capturing some of the work being undertaken this year.

About 6,000 seedings are expected to be planted across 2018. That includes 1,500 sedges and shrubs that were planted along the Serpentine River by 40 home-schooled children and their parents during School National Tree Day in July.  During another event in July, more than a dozen volunteers, including some from Alcoa, planted about 300 seedlings along the upper banks of the Harvey River.

Alcoa and Greening Australia have had a continuous partnership for the entire 35-years the not-for-profit organisation has been operating.

Greening Australia CEO Brendan Foran said the organisation valued its partnership with Alcoa.

“The Three Rivers Project presents a renewed partnership opportunity to extend our collaboration and to improve the condition of these three significant rivers,” Mr Foran said.  

Alcoa of Australia Chairman and Managing Director Michael Parker said the Company was proud to partner with groups like Greening Australia on important environmental work like the Three Rivers Project.

“We also value the opportunity to support and partner with wonderful volunteers from across our community who play a vital role in helping protect and enhance our local environment,” Mr Parker said.
