Community members get down and dirty to help river
More than a dozen people including volunteers from Alcoa rolled up their sleeves for a planting day along the Harvey River, near Lake Clifton, earlier this month organised as part of the Three Rivers Partnership between Greening Australia and the Alcoa Foundation.
The partnership, valued at nearly $500,000 in total, focuses on on-ground projects to improve the Serpentine, Murray and Harvey rivers over the next three years. About 6,000 seedlings are expected to be planted this winter at three sites along each of the rivers.
The recent planting day focused on the lower reaches of the Harvey River, where weed control has also been undertaken in conjunction with the Harvey River Recovery Taskforce, Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions and local landholders.
Jane Townsend, from the Harvey River Recovery Taskforce, took the group of volunteers on a tour along the river to explain the ecology of the area and point out work undertaken to slow the flow of the river and reduce erosion.
About 300 plants were installed on the upper bank of Harvey River and rubbish, including old tree guards, were collected from the site.
Alcoa of Australia Chairman and Managing Director Michael Parker thanked the volunteers involved in the recent planting day and similar activities.
"Alcoa is proud to partner with groups like Greening Australia on important environmental work like the Three Rivers Partnership," Mr Parker said.
"We also value the opportunity to support and partner with the wonderful volunteers from across the community who play a vital role in helping protect and enhance our local environment."
