Alcoa grants provide more critical support to local youth

Peel region youth are the focus of new grants totalling US$173,000 targeting health, well-being and education awarded by Alcoa Foundation this month.

Health provider GP down south and school volunteer organisation EdConnect Australia are the beneficiaries of the funding which is expected to benefit more than 550 Peel youth during the next two years.

Alcoa of Australia Chairman and Managing Director Michael Parker said the partnerships addressed priority areas for the region’s youth and would go a long way toward supporting future generations.

“There is clearly a strong need to support the well-being and education of local youth,” Mr Parker said.

“Our aim for these partnerships is to provide assistance to these young people during a very important time in their development.”

A US$100,000 contribution to GP down south will build on Alcoa’s existing partnership with the organisation to support the Peel Youth Medical Service (PYMS). The funding will help ensure young people, aged 12 to 25, from Waroona, Pinjarra, Mandurah, Yarloop, South Yunderup and Dwellingup have access to the health services they require, with a focus on providing much needed support for at-risk youth.

EdConnect Australia promotes education success and well-being for students through its inter-generational volunteer base. Working in partnership with schools, it provides students with a positive, older role model to help them develop educational and social skills.

Alcoa Foundation’s US$73,000 grant will help sustain and grow the local volunteer community to meet the high demand for support across a number of schools in the region.

These grants complement Peel focussed Alcoa Foundation partnerships announced earlier this year including with Aspire UWA which promotes university education high school students and SciTech that strives to improve maths learning outcomes in year and five students through the Alcoa Maths Enrichment Program (AMEP).

Alcoa Foundation has invested more than US$530 million in non-profit organisations across the globe since it was founded in 1952, with half of that funding supporting local initiatives in the communities where Alcoa operates.
