Alcoa proud at PrideFEST South West

Pride South West 2
Alcoa’s Wagerup employees celebrate LGBTIQ+ inclusion at PrideFEST South West in Bunbury.

Alcoa has been out in all its colour supporting the LGBTIQ+ community in the South West through the highly successful PrideFEST South West.

More than 2000 people attended the recent event in Bunbury with Alcoa’s Wagerup Refinery aligning as the major sponsor.

With support from the company’s employee inclusion and diversity affiliative group EAGLE (Employees at Alcoa for Gay & Lesbian Equality), Alcoa not only provided monetary support for the event but also had a significant display that included activities for children, career information, and giveaways.

PrideFEST South West is part of state-wide celebrations for LGBTQI+ support held in November each year. The event, which is in its fourth year, is coordinated by community group OUT South West.

OUT South West committee member Dana La Mon said the group was extremely grateful for Alcoa’s support, being the first major company to sponsor the event.    “Not only is their support monetary but the willingness of employees to come and help on the day is especially appreciated,” Ms La Mon said.

Alcoa has been a driving force behind LGBTQI+ inclusion, particularly in the Peel and SouthWest regions of WA. As well as being a sponsor for PrideFEST South West, the company is sponsoring the diversity element of Bunbury Fringe 2020 and is a supporting partner for PrideFEST WA.

Alcoa employees and their family members are set to hit the streets of Northbridge this weekend for PrideFEST WA’s annual parade, which is this year celebrating its 30th anniversary.

In recognition of the good work the company has been doing in this space, Alcoa was named as a Silver Tier Employer in the Australian Workplace Equality Index Awards last year, the national benchmarking instrument for LGBTQI+ workplace inclusion.

Alcoa is an integrated bauxite, alumina and aluminium producer. It has two bauxite mines and three alumina smelters in the south west of Western Australia.
