2020 graduates get first look at Alcoa

A group of 17 new recruits will join Alcoa’s Graduate Program in 2020.

An enthusiastic group of 17 new recruits were welcomed into the Alcoa fold at the company’s first Graduate Engagement Day last week — hearing career highlights and insights from leaders and former graduates and how the aluminium business operates in a competitive global market.

While some graduates had already commenced as a result of business demand and casual work opportunities, most will formally commence the highly competitive three-year Graduate Program in January 2020. They will work at Alcoa’s bauxite mines or alumina refineries south of Perth or the company’s head office in Booragoon.

Sophie Fyfe, who has joined Alcoa on a casual basis but will commence in the new year as a Graduate Electrical Engineer at Kwinana Alumina Refinery, said the opportunity to network with fellow graduates and meet Alcoa management and colleagues was invaluable.

“The Graduate Engagement Day was a nice way to learn about Alcoa as a company. I now have a greater understanding of how my role and the site I work at fit into the overall perspective of the company,” Sophie said.

“While studying I found it hard to imagine where my career would go. To secure a job with Alcoa, as an established reputable company, is unbelievable.

“2019 has been a big year for me. I finish my Undergraduate Honours Degree from Murdoch University in December and have joined a sought-after employer; it’s all quite surreal.”

Graduates will be employed across a range of disciplines including procurement, health and safety, digital mining, mining engineering, research science, chemistry, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering.

Alcoa has a proud history and commitment to training generations of skilled and educated employees, having trained and developed more than 2000 apprentices, trainees and graduates since 1963.

The company has also contributed economically and socially to the fabric of Western Australian society for more than 56 years. It employs some 4,200 people, many of whom live regionally in the communities where it operates.

Alcoa is committed to achieving greater gender balance and embraces diversity. The company has been named an Employer of Choice for Gender Equality by the Federal Government’s Workplace Gender Equality Agency for 17 consecutive years.
