We’re reflecting on 2022 and spotlighted 12 days of Alcoa content showcasing a recap of our favorite stories across the company.

#12: Alcoa celebrates multiple anniversary milestones

- Alcoa Foundation celebrated its 70-year legacy
- Alcoa Massena Operations celebrated its 120th anniversary
- Pinjarra Refinery, Australia, and Lista Operations, Alcoa Norway, celebrated 50 years
- Alcoa Fjarðaál, Iceland, celebrated 15 years

#11: Alcoa receives funding to pilot carbon-reduction technology for alumina refining, supporting Refinery of the Future initiative
“We are the lowest carbon intensity alumina producer in the world, and we have a technology roadmap of future-oriented research and development projects with the goal to reduce our footprint even further,” said Eugenio Azevedo, Alcoa’s Vice President for Continuous Improvement. “With this support from Australian governments, we are working on our vision to reinvent the aluminum industry for a sustainable future, which includes advancing projects of global significance for the aluminum industry and its customers.” Read more.
#10: Alcoa announces innovations in alloy development and deployment
Did you know – Most of the world’s aluminum alloys were first developed by Alcoa, including more than 44 different wrought alloys and 40 casting alloys. Alcoa’s Technical Center and its Centers of Excellence bring decades of metallurgy and engineering leadership to help customers solve challenges, including developing light-weighting solutions for electric vehicles. The Company’s latest innovations include the introduction of a new high-strength, 6000 series alloy, A210 ExtruStrong™, that delivers benefits across a wide range of extruded applications, including transport, construction, industrial, and consumer goods.
#9️: Alcoa increases casting capability in North America with investment in Canada
In July, Alcoa announced construction on a project to increase the casting capabilities at its Deschambault smelter in Canada to include standard ingots. This project will be fully complete in the first quarter of 2023 and will complement the site's T-bar casting pits. The full release can be viewed here.
#8️: Alcoa operates with sustainable energy contracts and methods
Did you know - Alcoa Corporation has a consolidated nameplate capacity of 946,000 metric tons per year (mtpy), across its three Canadian smelters, all powered by renewable hydroelectricity. Take a look at a few projects around the world that will further our focus on a more sustainable future:

#6️: New Alcoa mine site designed to eliminate risks for pedestrians
At Alcoa, we believe in the importance of a relentless focus on safety. Instead of tolerating or avoiding known risks, for our new mine in Western Australia, we re-thought our approach to create a pedestrian tunnel system separating people from light or heavy vehicles. Check it out!
#5️: Alcoa advances sustainably with recycled aluminum, produced using renewable energy
Did you know - At Alcoa’s Mosjøen plant, we’re using clean, renewable power to recycle via a new induction furnace. As a result, approximately 4,400 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year are avoided by not using a traditional furnace. That is the equivalent of taking about 1,000 cars with internal combustion engines off the road. Watch the full video and discover more:

#4️: Alcoa commissions new Brazilian processing facility, conserving water and land via innovative technology first adapted in Australia
Alcoa Brasil officially inaugurated the Press Filtration project, marking a new era of innovation, technology and sustainability as Alcoa works to reinvent the aluminum industry for a sustainable future.
Alcoa has successfully completed the installation of press filtration technology for bauxite residue at our Poços de Caldas refinery in Brazil, further leveraging technology that Alcoa first adapted in Australia. The installation of the filtration plant will reduce carbon emissions, due to the lower use of disposal area, lower water accumulation and, consequently, lower energy consumption in the process.

#2️: Apple to use ELYSIS™ zero-carbon aluminum for the latest iPhone SE
Apple announced it will use ELYSIS zero-carbon aluminum in the iPhone SE. Using a technological innovation first developed at the Alcoa Technical Center in Pittsburgh, ELYSIS eliminates all greenhouse gas emissions from the traditional smelting process, emitting instead pure oxygen as a by-product. It’s another major milestone in the commercialization of the technology and in Alcoa’s journey to reinvent the aluminum industry for a sustainable future. Read more.
