Almost half of Alcoa’s latest cohort of 28 apprentices are female, including Electrical and Instrumentation Apprentice, Gypsie Jacob.

Alcoa Australia President Michael Gollschewski said the company was committed to strengthening its workplace policies and practices each year.

“We will continue making meaningful changes to help attract, develop and retain top female talent to our business,” Mr Gollschewski said.

The Federal Government’s Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) named Alcoa an Employer of Choice for Gender Equality (EOCGE). The citation is a prestigious acknowledgment of organisations that encourage, recognise and promote active commitment to achieving gender equality in their workplaces.

WGEA Director Libby Lyons congratulated citation holders for driving the momentum for change.

“These industry leaders are showing other Australian businesses how to create a better and more equal future for both women and men,” Ms Lyons said.

EOCGE actions include entrenching organisation-wide flexible work practices, tailored parental leave policies to support use by women and men, programs to increase women in leadership, initiatives to support women to return to work and robust analysis and correction of gender pay gaps.
