Alcoa employees rally to help those in need

Kwinana Refinery Apprentices and volunteers from the Rotary Club of Kwinana cook Alcoa contractors’ breakfast to raise funds for the bushfire recovery.

Alcoa employees have been doing their bit to help those affected by the unprecedented bushfires on the east coast of Australia.

Alcoa’s Pinjarra, Kwinana and Wagerup refineries teamed up with their local Lions and Rotary clubs last week to hold bushfire fundraisers where employees were treated to a barbeque breakfast.

Nearly $10,000 was raised across the three sites and will now be donated to the Australian Red Cross and WIRES (Australian Wildlife Rescue Organisation).

This is in addition to a US$50,000 (~AU$73,000) donation from the Alcoa Foundation and a road train of hay donated by Alcoa’s WA Farmlands operation.

Alcoa Australia President Michael Gollschewski said while the major fires that had sadly claimed lives and properties so far this summer were some distance from the company’s bauxite, alumina and aluminium operations, the pain was still felt locally along with the awareness of the risks we all face.

“We express our sincere admiration and gratitude to all involved in the firefighting and recovery efforts including the growing number of volunteers making a difference,” Mr Gollschewski said.

“We particularly thank our employees who are among that volunteer army and involved in fundraising efforts.”
