Alcoa continues to be recognized for sustainability leadership

Alcoa was again named to the S&P Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index (DJSI North America). Alcoa has been recognized as a sustainability leader since the benchmark’s inception in 1999.

The DJSI is comprised of the top 20% of the largest 600 Canadian and U.S. companies. To be selected, companies must demonstrate long-term economic, environmental and social commitments. The evaluation considers each company’s Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) score, as well as other supporting evidence. In this instance,

Alcoa’s CSA score ranks in the 94th percentile. It retained its position as an industry leader in corporate governance, as well as operational eco-efficiency.

“Within the aluminum industry, Alcoa is a sustainability pioneer,” said Nicol Gagstetter, Alcoa’s Executive Vice President and Chief External Affairs Officer. “Our consistent inclusion in the DJSI reflects our commitment to creating value for our stakeholders while making a positive difference in our industry and our communities. With the support of our teams around the world, we will continue to improve our sustainability performance and advance our vision to reinvent the aluminum industry for a sustainable future.”

In 2023, Alcoa made further progress on its long-term sustainability goals, including reductions in water use and landfilled waste. Three of our locations successfully recertified to the newest version (V3) of Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI)’s Performance Standard. We also capitalized on convergence by collaborating with institutions like the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), a non-profit organization that works to accelerate the clean energy transition and global economic decarbonization.

As sustainability demands continue to rise, Alcoa is shifting its focus on readiness in 2024. This will allow the company to better measure and demonstrate efforts to reduce its environmental footprint and strengthen its social performance. While the road to better is often bumpy, success comes with determination.
