Alcoa Foundation Invests in Inclusive Recycling in Juruti

Collaboration with Recicleiros to establish new Recycling Unit and create dignified work for local waste-picker families

The Alcoa Foundation announced a US$500,000 (approximately R$2.8 million)* investment to strengthen the recycling ecosystem in Juruti, western Pará, Brazil, in collaboration with the Recicleiros Institute.

The project will establish a new Recycling Unit, develop a Municipal Selective Collection Plan and provide technical training and start-up support to local recycling cooperatives, improving efficiency, safety, and income generation for approximately 40 waste pickers and their families.

“The Recicleiros project demonstrates how improving people’s lives and protecting the environment can go hand in hand,” said Erich Burger Netto, Institutional Director of Recicleiros. “With the Alcoa Foundation’s support, we will empower local waste pickers, strengthen recycling infrastructure, and help Juruti become a model for circular economy in the Amazon.”

“Through this collaboration, we are advancing the Foundation’s commitment to community, landscape and economic resilience,” said Caroline Rossignol, President of the Alcoa Foundation. “By supporting Recicleiros’ work, we’re investing in sustainable and inclusive community development aimed at waste-related environmental and community health concerns and livelihoods in Juruti.”

In addition, the Alcoa Foundation awarded a separate US$90,000 grant in May 2025 to support the Recicleiros Waste Worker Academy, a free online education platform offering professional and behavioral training to cooperative members nationwide, complemented by select in-person sessions in Alcoa communities.

The Academy’s curriculum includes modules on operations, safety, leadership, administration, and governance, strengthening Brazil’s circular economy from the ground up.
