Alcoa showcases low-carbon products and innovation at ALUMINIUM 2022

Innovation

At Alcoa, our vision to reinvent the aluminum industry for a more sustainable future includes helping our customers lower their environmental footprint via our Sustana family of low-carbon products, which are the most comprehensive in the industry.

That’s one reason we’re thrilled to return to the 2022 ALUMINIUM fair in Düsseldorf, Germany to showcase how we’re reinventing the aluminum industry for a more sustainable future. Aluminium 2022 opened Sept. 27 and continues through Sept. 29 at the Düsseldorf Exhibition Center.

Aluminium 2022 focuses on solutions for automotive, mechanical engineering, building and construction, aerospace, electronics, packaging and transportation. We believe Alcoa is uniquely positioned to support customers with our mine-to-cast house advantage that helps them lower their carbon footprint simply by switching to Alcoa products.

Alcoa’s expansive exhibit brings forward a range of products and processes geared toward supporting customers.

  • Alcoa’s proprietary C611 EZCast™ alloy: an award-winning megacasting created for the automotive industry. A single megacasting replaces and eliminates assembly of 40 small castings components.
  • Superwide cast slab, a one-of-a-kind product with impressive dimensions of 8300 x 2930 x 610mm and a net weight of 40 metric tons. Slabs or rolling ingots are one of the most versatile aluminum value-add products, being used in a wide array of applications such as packaging, automotive, industrial tooling, aerospace or buildings. The superwide slab ensures better efficiency for the downstream processing and delivers an outstanding solution for advanced machine components, which are required in the next generation lithography systems that produce the semiconductors we use in our daily lives.
  • The world’s only aluminum created by the ELYSIS™ carbon-free smelting process, first developed by Alcoa. This new smelting technology eliminates all greenhouse gas emissions from the smelting process, emitting pure oxygen instead. The display features both ELYSIS ingots and the AUDI e-tron Sport GT wheel.

Additionally, Alcoa highlighted how aluminum remains a versatile material with a range of applications and lighter weight with its display of a stunning mid-century aluminum piano. Pianos are one more example of Alcoa’s innovation. Traditionally, pianos were made of cast iron. In 1938, a passionate piano designer had the idea to create a piano made of aluminum. During the next decade, the first prototypes were made, with Alcoa supplying aluminum to the piano manufacturers. The strength of aluminum permitted manufacturing of lighter pianos, with a weight reduction up to 60 percent, and clearer, higher quality sound.
