Alcoa Invests $5.4 Million to Build Juruti’s First Licensed Sanitary Landfill

The project will replace the city’s current dumpsite, improving basic sanitation and protecting soil, water, and air quality for approximately 50,000 residents.
Alcoa Corporation announced an investment of R$29.5 million (approximately US$5.4 million*) to construct a new licensed sanitary landfill in Juruti, western Pará, Brazil.
The project, designed to meet Brazil’s environmental and public-health standards, will replace the city’s open-air dumpsite and enable safer, more controlled waste disposal.
“The landfill project reflects Alcoa’s ongoing commitment to the well-being of communities in the Amazon,” said Daniel Santos, President of Alcoa Brazil. “By improving sanitation infrastructure, we are contributing to cleaner, safer, and healthier communities. This support is emblematic of our core value Care for People and is at the heart of Alcoa’s actions in our host communities.”
The new facility—the fourth licensed sanitary landfill in the state of Pará—will serve approximately 50,000 residents and replace the current uncontrolled dumpsite. As a licensed landfill, it will include engineered protective lining, leachate and gas management systems, and controlled disposal operations to prevent soil and groundwater contamination.
The site will have a total capacity of 300,000 cubic meters, with engineering in its final phase and firm quotations from contractors expected soon.
A phase change is anticipated in March 2026, and construction is expected to begin in June 2026, with operations projected to start by mid-2027.
“This is a milestone for Juruti and the state of Pará,” said Lucidia Batista, Mayor of Juruti. “The partnership with Alcoa shows how collaboration between the private sector and local governments can deliver tangible benefits for our communities.”
