It’s the first time Alcoa has received the top score in the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s assessment of LGBTQ+ workplace equality.

Alcoa received a score of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s 2025 Corporate Equality Index, the foremost benchmarking survey and report in the U.S. measuring corporate policies and practices related to LGBTQ+ workplace equality.

This is the first time Alcoa has earned a perfect score on the CEI and is indicative of the company’s broad efforts to build a more inclusive, diverse workforce. As noted by President and CEO William F. Oplinger, IDE efforts are a strategic imperative to help Alcoa attract, retain and develop the best and the brightest.

“We’ve consistently made progress, and it’s great to have an external, reliable source recognize these efforts,” said Global Director of Inclusion, Diversity and Equity Tiago Betti. “The perfect score on the 2025 CEI is exactly that -- an external validation of our internal progress. It also gives us an opportunity to achieve new benchmarks and keep striving to demonstrate our commitment to IDE.”

Alcoa improved its score to 100 in part by developing the DiversiTalks leadership training sessions on LGBTQ+ issues and providing more clarity in spousal and domestic partner benefits with the publication of the LGBTQ+ Benefits Guide. It also established global Gender Transition Guidelines to give HR professionals and managers the background they need to fully support employees.

This year’s CEI includes 1,449 businesses, the highest number of rated companies since its inception in 2002. It assesses publicly and privately held mid- to large-sized businesses, including Fortune magazine’s 500 largest publicly traded businesses. They are rated on detailed criteria falling under four central pillars:

  • Non-discrimination policies across business entities;
  • Equitable benefits for LGBTQ+ workers and their families;
  • Supporting an inclusive culture; and
  • Corporate social responsibility.
