Employees expand Alcoa's positive impact through month-long Community Impact Campaign
More than 360 employees participated in the Alcoa Foundation's first annual Community Impact Campaign in November to expand positive impacts in the communities where Alcoa employees live and work. The Foundation committed $405,000 in grants to charitable organizations across Alcoa’s global footprint, with volunteer events supporting those organizations taking place across 27 Alcoa locations.
“Helping our local communities and seeing the progress a group of people with motivation and care for others can achieve is amazing,” said Nathan Roberts, Smelter Mechanical Engineer at Alcoa Warrick. “I am proud to call myself an Alcoan and grateful for the chance to serve those in need,” he added.
The Community Impact Campaign aims to boost employee engagement and volunteering across the company. The Alcoa Foundation has been a catalyst for positive impact for more than 70 years by investing in projects that advance sustainable social, environmental and economic outcomes. In 2023, the Foundation awarded US$5.9 million in grants to 85 projects in 11 countries.
“I am so thankful to all the employees and retirees who made the campaign a true demonstration of Alcoa’s values, especially care for people,” Alcoa Foundation President Caroline Rossignol said. “We engaged Alcoans across our entire global footprint, supported organizations that are important to host communities and created purpose-driven connection among employees.”
Some highlights from the campaign:
- In Australia, Alcoa Foundation’s donation of $80,000 helped deliver a Deadly Sista Girlz cricket carnival, a celebration of culture and sportsmanship focused on empowering First Nations girls in Western Australia. Employees organized and implemented the carnival. In Victoria, employees assisted the Salvation Army Portland in preparing for the opening of their community drop-in center, including gardening and repairs.
- In Brazil, employees from Poços de Caldas volunteered at the 9th FortaleSer Meeting, an event supporting oncology patients and their families. Alcoa Foundation’s donation supported the Fisioncologia project, enabling the purchase of therapy equipment and essential supplies for patient care. The event also featured choir performances, presentations about volunteering, and a community lunch.
- In Canada, employees from Alcoa’s Baie-Comeau site prepared holiday food boxes at a charity that provides food aid to those in need. In Montreal, employees wrapped holiday gifts for women and children at the Native Women’s Shelter of Montreal.
- In Norway, employees from Alcoa’s Mosjoen site participated in a city clean up in partnership with a local charity and shared a meal and conversation with them afterwards.
- In the United States, volunteers, including employees and several retirees, prepped meals for community members at the Community Kitchen Pittsburgh. Nearby in New Kensington, employees from Alcoa’s Technical Center similarly prepped meals for individuals facing food insecurity or hunger at the Knead Community Cafe.
