ELYSIS metal behind Ball Corporation’s shining debut at Davos
Aluminum made from Alcoa’s innovative ELYSIS™ process featured prominently in Ball Corp.’s low-carbon aluminum cup, which made its shining debut in January at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
The cup is made of 90 percent recycled aluminum and 10 percent low-carbon primary aluminum from ELYSIS, Alcoa’s technology partnership with Rio Tinto and the Government of Quebec that eliminates all greenhouse gas emissions and instead emits oxygen.
Alcoa has been a supplier to Ball, one of the world’s largest providers of aluminum beverage packaging, as well as Novelis, which also was part of the partnership.
“This is a perfect illustration of how we work hand-in-hand with our customers to offer products in a carbon-constrained world, whether with our Sustana™ line of low-carbon products or through our breakthrough technologies,” said EVP and Chief Commercial Officer Renato Bacchi.
The cup that debuted at Davos features a QR code that links to a landing page with more info about the partnership, including a video about the unique collaboration.
Ball said that producing the net-zero cup aligns with its commitment as a part of the First Movers Coalition, a global coalition of companies using their collective purchasing power to decarbonize the world's hard-to-abate sectors, to purchase 10% of primary aluminum annually as low-carbon aluminum by 2030.
“We hope that the cup shows that decarbonizing the aluminum sector at pace and scale is possible,” Ball President and CEO Dan Fisher said. “Effective collaboration is necessary to implement innovative, disruptive solutions that can help drive climate action.”
