Alcoa Leader Featured at Industry Transition Conference
This week, leaders from across the globe are gathered in Pittsburgh for Reuters Industry Transition 2023, and Alcoa is a proud sponsor.
We invented the aluminum industry more than 135 years ago, and that legacy motivates us for a better future, one where aluminum will become even more important.
Aluminum is light weight, strong, and infinitely recyclable, and aluminum demand is expected to grow significantly in the years to come. We recognize, however, that aluminum is energy intensive to produce, and the production process used globally emits carbon dioxide. This is one reason why the aluminum sector is considered a "hard-to-abate industrial sector," but we’re up to the challenge.
We are working on decarbonization strategies, including breakthrough technologies, to further differentiate our company. We have an ambition to reach net zero emissions (Scope 1 and Scope 2) across our global operations by 2050.
We will discuss at the Reuters event some of the work that we’re doing that aligns with our corporate vision to reinvent the aluminum industry for a sustainable future. We believe the event can help drive increased awareness about industrial-scale decarbonization opportunities and promote collaboration across sectors.
All of this matters because the world needs aluminum. It is vital for building the electric vehicles and renewable energy infrastructure, both in generation and transmission, that powers a low-carbon future.
Our net zero ambition aligns with our existing sustainability goals and is supported by our technology roadmap of breakthrough R&D programs, which includes:
- ELYSIS™ joint venture, which eliminates all GHGs from the smelting process. This partnership company is based on technology first developed by Alcoa near Pittsburgh at the Alcoa Technical Center.
- Refinery of the Future, which aims to achieve zero-carbon alumina refining through a host of new processes and technologies.
- ASTRAEA™, a proprietary technology under development that can purify any molten aluminum scrap to purity levels that far exceeds what can be produced at most commercial smelters.
We welcome you to join us at Reuters Industry Transition 2023, where Alcoa’s Andrew Estel, Vice President of Strategy & Business Development, hosts a fireside chat on our corporate vision to reinvent the aluminum industry.
