Water is an important component of our manufacturing operations in Europe, and we are focused on achieving Alcoa’s global goal of a 25% improvement in freshwater-use intensity by 2020 and 30% by 2030 versus 2005 levels.

Despite our efforts, both the intensity and volume of water used at our European locations increased 13.1% and 1.1%, respectively, in 2013 over the prior year. The increases were due to measurement improvements, increased production at some sites that did not maintain their previous water-use intensity, and production declines at other sites without a proportional reduction in water consumption.
