Alcoa in Suriname
Community Investments 
In 2001, 6 direct grants totaling US$152,000 were made by Alcoa Foundation in Suriname. This was supplemented by Alcoa company contributions in the amount of US$109,000.

With the help of an Alcoa Foundation grant, the nonprofit Stichting Projekta has developed a program for these 16-to-23-year-old students to teach them managerial skills and instill the qualities that will help them to become community leaders, managers, and employers in the South American republic. This grant embodies "Skills Today for Tomorrow" Area of Excellence.

Grants were also made to:

  • The Ministry of Education for St. Wilhemena's School to build a kindergarten and improve early childhood education ("Global Education in Business, Engineering, Science and Technology.")
  • The Rotary Club for a malaria prevention program Stichting Levin en Gezondheid Suriname for a healthcare and substance abuse program and Stichting Lands Hospital to purchase equipment needed for this hospital, which primarily serves women and children ("Safe and Healthy Children and Families.")
  • Stichting Zonder Naam to educate people with diabilities so they can have meaningful employment in their communities ("Skills Today for Tomorrow.")
