Alcoa's presence in Suriname extends back to 1916.  The business, now known as Suriname Aluminum Company, L.L.C. (Suralco L.L.C.), originally focused on mining bauxite, an ore from which alumina is extracted and used to make aluminum.  In 1958, Suralco signed an agreement with the Suriname government to develop the country's hydropower and bring the aluminum industry to the country.  Today, Suralco produces approximately 3,500 metric tons of alumina each day at its Paranam location.

Suralco celebrates 95 Years Bauxite Industry in Suriname

On Monday 19 December Suriname Aluminum Company, L.L.C. (Suralco) will mark the day in history that 95 years ago the first bauxite ore was mined in Moengo, East-Suriname. This is a memorable moment in the history of the company and for Suriname. With 1,200 employees and contractors Suralco has become an important player in the Surinamese society.

This memorable moment cannot go unnoticed. A special organizing committee was established and put to work. To kick off the month of celebration, on 19 November a party bus and a drum band visited all departments of Suralco. With announcements and nice give-away prices all employees were made aware of the upcoming milestone. From that moment on short presentations and announcements were continuously made within the departments, in meetings and banners were placed in and outside the plants. By end November every employee received a memorable gift on the occasion of 95 Year Anniversary.

External parties were also considered in the celebrations. On 15 December, at a special organized event in Paramaribo, a number of schools received a computer from Suralco. In the evening of 19 December Suralco will give a reception for its business and community relations and will handover checks to the 2011 Alcoa Foundation Grant recipients.

During the day of the milestone, a party for the employees will be held at two locations simultaneously. Employees at Moengo Mines and the Nassau Project Team will go dancing and celebrating with one of Suriname’s most popular bands in the center of Moengo city. For the employees at Paramaribo, Paranam Refinery, Afobaka Hydro Dam and Successor Mines the party will be held at Paranam and will be as big as the party in Moengo with another very popular band of Suriname, and with as much food and drinks and fun.-.
