Situated in the northeastern part of South America, Suriname is 85% covered by rainforest. For generations, Alcoa and Suriname have worked together to bring the benefits of development home while ensuring that the forest and other precious sustainable resources will endure. In Suriname today, Alcoa has restored large wetlands around the Paranam refinery as a natural buffer between the facility and the small surrounding communities. Our mine rehabilitation program uses indigenous knowledge of local flora to restore mine sites as accurately and rapidly as possible to their original condition. As Suriname looks ahead to share its natural beauty with the world, Alcoa will continue to provide jobs, community development and sustainable power while preserving and nurturing a unique and treasured environment.
