Energy

Suralco is in the first quartile of low energy consumers among alumina refineries worldwide. However, we want to do better.

To reduce energy consumption, we are in the process of executing various capital projects throughout the refinery to recover wasted energy. In addition, tests are underway to reduce fuel consumption in the calcination process through improved combustion. Advanced control strategies are also being employed to optimize heat transfer, combustion, and steam use. These initiatives should result in an energy consumption of 9.92 gigajoules per metric ton of alumina produced—a reduction of 3% over 2000 consumption—by the year 2005.
