March 27, 2009 Each year, Alcoans in Massena Ops’ Environmental Department mentor Massena Central High School students who work toward creative solutions for real-time problems that the plant experiences. The program, called Tech Prep, is sponsored by St. Lawrence University and several local businesses, including Alcoa, which also supports the program through a Small Community Grant. St. Lawrence University students also mentor the teams.

The 2009 team is exploring methods of reducing our environmental footprint by using more environmentally-friendly cleaning products in our plants. The students will make recommendations on “green” products we might incorporate, along with cost estimates for converting to these products. The 2008 team looked at solutions to mitigate increased fluoride concentrations that one of our outfalls experiences during periods of high run-off.
