Tri-State Employers Focus On Safety

NEWBURGH, IN: March 7, 2006 - Major employers from across the Tri-State will participate in a safety School hosted by Alcoa Warrick Operations this Thursday, March 9th at The Centre in downtown Evansville. The annual event planned by the Warrick Plant Safety and Health Steering Committee will bring together 350 participants for educational opportunities on issues such as Ergonomics, Hand and Finger Injuries, and Electrical Safety. There are also classes for off-the-job safety issues such as Defensive Driving and Emergency Preparedness.

"At Alcoa, the safety of our employees is our highest priority. Bringing together businesses from across the region to focus on safety is a great way to share best-practices and learn from each other about how to keep our employees safe in the workplace," said Ann Whitty, Vice President & General Manager at Alcoa Warrick Operations.

Joining the Alcoa employees at the day-long training session are representatives from Alcan, Aleris/TSISC, Bristol-Myers Squibb, CMS, FES Systems, Fluor, MBCI, Safety Compliance Associates, the Town of Newburgh, Toyota, USI, Vectren and Vigo Coal.

While many of the classroom presenters are Alcoa employees, others are coming from the American Red Cross, Indiana State Police, Norfolk Southern, Star One Consulting, Toyota, Vanderburgh County Building Commission, the United Steelworkers of America, Vectren and the Warrick County Sheriff's Department.

Steve Borkowski, Safety Manager for Warrick Operations Primary Metals, said "Employees from across our plant are excited to participate in the Alcoa Safety School. They recognize it as a great opportunity to come together focused on learning new skills that enhance the overall safety of our plant. We have a great lineup of classes that will increase the expertise of our safety leaders at work and also in their every day lives."

The Plant Safety and Health Steering Committee has existed as a joint committee between Alcoa and the USWA Local 104 since the first metal was poured at Warrick. The group is responsible for addressing safety issues across the plant and leading initiatives to provide continuous improvement to the health and safety of the Warrick Operations employees.

Media representatives can attend the Safety School for photography and interviews on Thursday, March 9th. The Electrical Safety class offered in the afternoon and presented by Vectren professionals will provide a good opportunity for visual media. Please contact Amy Smith at 812-853-1089 or 812-708-0066 (cellular) to set-up interview opportunities.
