Warrick Power Plant Project Ahead of Schedule

Members of the media learned that the Warrick Power Plant (WPP) Strategic Environmental Project is ahead of schedule at an Open House at WPP on Wednesday, September 6th. Plant leadership shared information about Alcoa, about the local plant and specifically about the $400+ Million project underway at the WPP. The media also toured the plant to get a first-hand look at the construction site.

The big news turned out to be that just one year into the project, the team has been able to speed up the schedule to bring the scrubbers online even sooner than expected. The last of the four scrubbers is now expected to go online in November 2008, more than one year ahead of regulatory requirements. The first scrubber will be online in May 2008.

The new project timeline also means that more construction workers will be needed on the project than earlier expected. From September 2007 through September 2008, nearly 700 workers will be working at the site each day.

More than 25 new, permanent employees will be needed to operate the new equipment that will provide for a:
  • 98% reduction in Sulfur Dioxide (SO2);
  • 87% reduction in Particulate Matter (PM);
  • 99% reduction in Hydrochloric Acid (HCl);
  • 60% reduction in Mercury (Hg);
  • 50% reduction in Sulfuric Acid (H2SO4); and
  • 6 to 8 Million gallon per day wastewater reduction

Friendsville Mine Open For Business

Leaders from Vigo Coal Company, Inc. and Alcoa joined elected officials and community leaders to cut the ribbon on the tri-state’s newest coal operation, the Friendsville Mine on Saturday, August 26th. The mine represents a $55 Million investment by Alcoa and will be managed and operated by Vigo Coal Company, Inc.

Friendsville Mine has been under development for more than a year and recently began shipping what will be more than 1 million tons of coal each year to the Alcoa Warrick Power Plant via railcar. Alcoa has invested $55 Million, including $30 Million in infrastructure and buildings and $13 Million in mobile equipment. More than 50 employees are working presently with several more still needed to fill open positions. The mine will contribute more than $10 Million to the regional economy each year through payroll, purchases and taxes.

Royce Haws, Warrick Operations Primary Metals Location Manager, said, “the primary aluminum market is incredibly competitive with smelters around the world hanging in the balance with their power supply contracts. The Warrick smelter depends on cost-competitive power supplied by the Warrick Power Plant. This partnership with Vigo Coal Company, Inc. provides an opportunity to help control costs at the Warrick smelter, securing jobs for years to come.”

“Friendsville Mine represents a tremendous opportunity for Vigo Coal Company, Inc. to extend our relationship with Alcoa and develop an impressive coal mine here in Southern Illinois,” said Mike Schiele, Chief Executive Officer of Vigo Coal Company, Inc. “We have been pleased with the welcome that this community has given to us and with our ability to find the complement of high-quality employees needed to operate the mine.”

Alcoa Foundation President Visits Warrick Ops

Warrick Operations welcomed Meg McDonald, Alcoa Foundation President, on Tuesday, August 29th. McDonald toured the operation and learned about Alcoa’s role in the community through a visit to Studio Bee, a youth center in Boonville, with Alcoa Warrick’s Community Advisory Board.

Studio Bee has benefited from more than $50,000 in Alcoa Foundation funding since 2000. Those funds have helped the center from the beginning setting the groundwork for success in creating a safe place for young people to go for after-school activities and tutoring. This summer, Studio Bee used Alcoa Foundation funding to create the BEE Healthy Boot Camp to encourage participants to get physically active and eat healthy snacks.

Amy James, Executive Director of Studio Bee, and several members of her Board of Directors welcomed the Alcoa Community Advisory Board to the center with a tour of the facilities and by providing a conference room for the group to meet. McDonald was very impressed with the work being done at Studio Bee and the obvious grassroots sponsorship that has been exhibited by the community to provide consistent support for the center and its programs.
