Alcoa Texarkana to Install Tube Mills

Alcoa Inc. announced that it is relocating two recently acquired welded tube production lines and supporting equipment to the Alcoa Mill Products plant at Texarkana. The equipment is part of a purchase of assets Alcoa made earlier this year from the former Scottsboro Aluminum rolling mill facility in Alabama.

Mark Peppers, welded tube account manager said, "The addition of these lines at our Texarkana plant will provide Alcoa's customers a full complement of welded tube products.. In the markets we currently serve, the Alcoa name is synonymous with customer service and value; we are delighted with this exciting opportunity to serve the welded tube marketplace." Peppers has ten years previous experience in the welded tube market with Norandal, Scottsboro Aluminum and Commonwealth Aluminum.

The new lines will potentially increase employment by 15-20 people, according to plant manager Peter J. Velotas. "We expect the initial mill to begin by April with the second to be running by mid-year, greatly expanding our customer base" said Velotas.

Welded tube products can be found in a variety of furniture, recreational and medical-aid applications. The welded tube lines transform coiled aluminum sheet into a tube or other cylindrical shape, longitudinally welding the product while maintaining extremely close gage tolerances. The two lines will produce products with diameter ranges of 1/2 inch to 2 inches. Various gauge, lengths, alloy, temper, shape and finishes will be offered to customers.

Alcoa Mill Products - Texarkana currently has over 325 employees making coiled aluminum sheet products for customers in the commercial transportation, automotive, building and construction, and distributions markets.
