Alcoa Foundation Partners With ThinkFirst To Create and Test Injury Prevention Program for Middle School Students
PITTSBURGH, PA - October 25, 2004 - Alcoa Foundation today announced that it has awarded nearly $30,000 to the ThinkFirst National Injury Prevention Foundation to field test a new program that aims to reduce the number of spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries among students in fourth through eighth grade - the age group at highest risk of preventable injury.
Alcoa Foundation has partnered with ThinkFirst, a non-profit organization based in Rolling Meadows, Illinois, to develop the curriculum created in two phases. The grant will allow ThinkFirst to field test the program in the United States. The school-based program will be taught by teachers and healthcare professionals such as school nurses using learning modules in a teacher's guide. All modules have interactive exercises for reinforcement.
If the curriculum is found to be effective in increasing knowledge of injury prevention while decreasing risk-taking behaviors in fourth through eighth grade students, it will be implemented across the country. The mission of ThinkFirst is to prevent brain, spinal cord and other traumatic injuries through education.
"ThinkFirst is grateful for Alcoa Foundation's continuing support of our injury prevention education effort," said Dorothy L. Zirkle, CEO of ThinkFirst. "This funding is especially important because it will enable us to reach students in junior high and middle school who comprise the largest cohort of youth risk-takers and are the most easily swayed by peer pressure. Consequently, they are the most likely to be involved in preventable injuries or unintentional violence."
