Alcoa Foundation Grant Helps Junior Achievement Educate Students About Today’s Global Marketplace
PITTSBURGH, PA – NOVEMBER 24, 2004 – Alcoa Foundation today announced that it has awarded a $20,000 grant to Junior Achievement (JA) of Southwest Pennsylvania, Inc. for its “Trade Connects the World” program that educates sixth grade students about their role in today’s global economy.

“This program will demonstrate to nearly 8,000 sixth grade students in Western Pennsylvania how international trade affects their daily lives,” said William G. Lucas, director of development at Junior Achievement of Southwest Pennsylvania. Students will learn why companies must have an international presence to compete in today’s marketplace, and how they play an important role in this economic system.”

The grant is part of Alcoa Foundation’s commitment to improving the quality of life of Alcoa communities worldwide. Alcoa employs more than 2,000 in the region at the Alcoa Corporate Center on Pittsburgh’s North Shore and Alcoa Technical Center in Lower Burrell, Westmoreland County Junior Achievement of Southwest Pennsylvania aims to provide children with a fundamental understanding of the American free enterprise system by educating them about free enterprise, business and economics. Through age-appropriate curricula, JA programs begin at the elementary school level, teaching children how they can impact the world around them as individuals, workers and consumers. JA programs continue through the middle and high school grades, preparing students for additional key economic and workforce issues they will face in the future.
