River Study and Reforestation

A $300,000 Alcoa Foundation grant was presented to The Nature Conservancy during a ceremony held at the Statehouse Rotunda in Indianapolis, Indiana, (USA) this week.

The funds will be used to help initiate a scientific assessment for conservation and restoration efforts for the Wabash River in Indiana. The assessment will identify what animal and plant species depend on the river for habitat and sustenance, where they are found in and along the river, stresses on the river system and sources of those stresses. In addition to the Wabash River Assessment, the grant will also fund critical reforestation efforts in southwestern Indiana.

Speaking during the ceremony, Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman said: "Here in Indiana, we all have the responsibility to be stewards of our environment. Today's event celebrates the hard work The Nature Conservancy and Alcoa Foundation are doing to preserve the Wabash River and maintain Indiana as a special place to live." Alcoa has five plants in Indiana and Illinois located less than 35 miles from the Wabash River or one of its main tributaries.
