Badin is located on the Yadkin River in northeastern Stanly County, in the south central section of North Carolina. Badin is an incorporated community with a population of approximately 1800. Alcoa began producing Aluminum at Badin in August 1916 after purchasing and completing the holdings of a French combine which had started work on a smelter.
In April 2010, Alcoa announced that the Badin Smelter would be closed and the property redeveloped for future industrial use.
Badin Works is located on approximately 123 acres of land.

Thursday, January 31, 2013Project Completed
We are pleased to announce that the capping project is
complete and that the boat ramp will be reopened to the general public starting
tomorrow, February 1, 2013. The final
site cleanup tasks are expected to be completed in the morning. People who wish to use the Badin Lake boat
landing and parking lot are asked to be careful and avoid areas where cleanup
is being finished. Currently the Badin
Lake elevation is roughly 2.5' below full pool and is anticipated to rise as
weather allows.
This post marks the final blog update for this
project. Alcoa greatly appreciates your
patience and cooperation throughout the project. Thank you!

Capping work will be completed today and the water level
within the lake will begin to be brought up to full pool elevation. Currently the lake is roughly 3.5' below full
pool and the schedule for refilling of the lake is largely weather
dependent. The Badin Lake boat ramp and
parking will remain closed until the contractor is able to demobilize all
of their materials, equipment, and personnel and restore the site to
pre-project conditions. The Badin boat
ramp is still rescheduled to open on February 1, 2013.

The Badin Lake capping project continues to progress on
schedule. The capping work is scheduled
to be completed in the next couple of weeks.
Following completion, the lake will be filled an additional 4.5'-5.0' to
its full pool elevation. The schedule for
refilling of the lake is largely weather dependent. The Badin Lake boat ramp and parking lot that
are currently being used as a staging area for the project will be reopened to
the public on February 1, 2013.

The capping work within Badin Lake continues to progress as scheduled. The refilling of Badin Lake to a level within 5' of full pool elevation is complete. The lake will be held within 6" of this elevation for the duration of the capping project. The project is still scheduled to be completed by the end of January and the boat ramp reopened to the public by February 1, 2013.

The Badin Lake capping work continues to progress as
scheduled. The refilling of Badin Lake
started at the end of last week. So far,
the lake level has increased a little over 4', and is less than 11' below full
pool elevation. The refilling rate of
the lake will remain largely weather dependent, and will continue until the
lake is roughly 5' below full pool. We
expect it will be at that level by the end of the year. It will stay at this level until the capping
work is fully complete.
The Badin boat ramp will remain closed to the public over
the holidays and for the remainder of the capping effort. Continue to monitor this blog site for
project updates. Real time Badin Lake
levels can be monitored by using the link near the top of the page.

The project proceeded as planned this week and continues
to be on schedule. The lake will
immediately begin to be refilled to a level that is roughly 5' below full pool. The rate at which the lake level can be
brought up is dependent on weather and associated upstream (High Rock, etc.)
lake level management. Based on the
current schedule we anticipate that the lake will be back to 5' below full pool
no later than December 31st. The lake
level will remain 5' below full pool to assist in placing capping
material. The remediation project is
expected to be completed by the end of January.
The Badin Lake boat landing and parking lot will continue
to remain closed. As previously advised,
the general public should not approach work areas due to heavy equipment
traffic and operations.

Placement of capping material started this week. Barge traffic in the project area will begin to pick up, as materials are moved from the boat landing to the north capping area. As a result, the area is not currently safe for recreational watercraft and the community is advised to avoid the area.
The Badin Lake water level will continue to drop until Monday, December 10. At that point, the lake will be approximately 15' below full pool elevation for up to a week. Anyone wishing to use the lake during the low level period should proceed with extreme caution and avoid the Badin cove area.

The work at the Badin Lake boat landing is underway. The Badin boat ramp is closed and will remain closed until the end of the project, which is currently scheduled for late January. Other Badin Lake boat ramps will remain open, but access will become more limited as the water level drops. Please be advised that the general public should never approach the work areas. Heavy equipment operation make the areas unsafe for the general public. Continue to use this blog site for information and updates regarding the project.
