Alcoa has been in Hungary for 17 years. It acquired majority ownership in the Light Metal Works in Székesfehérvár, and full ownership in 1966. In the light of the successful transformation, modernization of the company, further Alcoa investments followed.

At present six manufacturing branches are parts of Alcoa-Köfém Ltd. in Hungary: the European Mill Products (EMP), combining Casthause and Flat Rolled Products MU s, Alcoa Wheel and Transportation Products (AWTP), combining Alcoa Wheel Products and Auto and Truck Structures, Alcoa Fastening Systems (AFS), and Alcoa Power and Propulsion (APP) Howmet castings. Alcoa has also deployed its global service center in Hungary covering Financial and Administrative issues.

In November 2005 Alcoa launched a major modernization investment in the amount of $84 million (HUF 17.5 billion). The investment was finished by the end of 2007. The goal of investment was to shift Köfém’s product-mix to a range of higher value-added products. Its central element was to diversify and upgrade the Rolled products MU product-mix. The production of ultra-thin aluminum sheets used in the automotive industry for heat exchangers became possible, which had never before produced by the company.

Another significant development took place in the Wheel Product (AWPE) manufacturing unit, which produces aluminum wheels for heavy vehicles, trailers, trucks, and buses since 1997. A new production line manufacturing wheels with Dura Bright® surface treatment, developed and patented by Alcoa, was launched. This technology, which protects wheels from corrosion, maintains their shine and sheen and allows for easy cleaning, was previously only used in the USA and Mexico by Alcoa.

The third element of the developments was the deployment of Alcoa Howmet (Power & Propulsion) in the company. The new plant performs finishing and quality assurance on the precision castings made of super-alloys used as components of the industrial gas turbines and jet engines.

Lastly, these upgrades made necessary the extension of the company’s infrastructure, like its energy system, internal road network, truck gates, etc.

Alcoa Hungary plays an important role in the country. The six BUs represent $800 million investment with which Alcoa was the 6th largest among all, 2nd biggest American investors in Hungary in 2008. Its revenue increased nine fold since 1993 to $1,3 billion, 90% of which is from export. It accounts for 75-80% of the total aluminum export of the country.

Alcoa has not only invested in Hungary, deployed its state-of-the-art technologies, production and management systems, but also implanted its CSR conduct, its commitment to sustainable development, which is the fundamental philosophy of the corporation business culture, and practice. The objective of improving manufacturing performance and efficiency is combined with its commitment to environment consciousness, solidarity toward society, local communities, strict adherence to Alcoa global safety and health protection norms in the workshops, and conducting ethical relations with its partners.

Most of Alcoa’s humanitarian activity is done by Alcoa Foundations, by its philanthropic arm.

The Foundation extended its support to the Hungarian civil organizations since Alcoa’s presence in Hungary, since 1993. During the last 17 years an aggregate amount of $6 million cash grant was approved by the Foundation, supporting around 450 Hungarian projects in education, health care, and environment protection, cultural and social fields. Alcoa is the largest patron-like donator in Hungary.

Alcoa has been instrumental in Hungary’s economic transformation into a market-base economy.

Alcoa in Hungary for its CSR conduct and philanthropy has received numerous national and local awards commensurate with its respective performance.
