Explosion at Fjardaal substation
An explosion took place in the substation of the Alcoa Fjardaal smelter in Reydarfjordur just after 5.00 pm today, Saturday, December 18, causing a fire in the substation. Nobody was injured and Alcoa Fjardaal employees immediately activated the emergency response system, which was followed by response from the local fire brigades. Fire fighters managed to extinguish the fire around 9:30 pm.
All relevant authorities have been informed and a full investigation regarding the nature of the explosion and fire as well as possible damages to the smelter is ongoing. Following the explosion and fire, the power to the smelter was cut off, but was gradually restored as of around 7.00 pm. It is too early to tell if and how this fire will affect production at the Alcoa Fjardaal smelter.
