Alcoa Fjardaál receives Continuous Education Award
Fjardaál was recently presented with the East-Iceland’s Knowledge Center’s (ÞNA) Continuous Education Award for the company’s active educational program and its contribution to knowledge and community development.
Fjardaál operates a wide-ranging educational program with the main focus on environmental, health and safety issues. All new employees start their career at the company with a three-week course to prepare themselves for their jobs in the smelter, and senior employees regularly attend retraining courses. The company plans to further enhance educational opportunities by establishing an integrated training program, and also to increase the variety of continuous education programs. The photo (right) shows members of Alcoa Fjardaál’s human resources team celebrate the award with Fjardaál employees who were participating in a course in electrical drawings. That course is an ideal example of Fjardaál’s educational opportunities: a ten-week course held in the smelter, in co-operation with East-Iceland’s Vocational School (VMA). It is an intensive refresher course in the use of electrical drawings and the students can use the credits towards a degree in VMA.
