All four-year olds in East-Iceland presented with a good book
All four year old children in East Iceland get the book The Animal’s Alphabet by Icelandic writer Halldór Á. Elvarsson as a gift from libraries in East Iceland. Alcoa Fjardaál sponsors the project.
The first books were presented on the Day of the Icelandic Language, November 16, when children and parents in Neskaupstadur town visited the local library. Almost 300 children get the book. The purpose of the project is to ignite children’s interest in reading, to introduce to them the mysteries of the library and to encourage parents to read for their children. The project spans two years, so it covers children born in 2006 and 2007. “I believe that by reading for children, you help them widen the horizon and open a door to the magical world of stories and books,” said Halldór Á. Elvarsson, the author of The Animal’s Alphabet. Óskar Thór Thráinsson, project manager and librarian in the Neskaupstadur Library, said that parents who read for children not only provide ideal quality time: they also encourage their children to read. “Reading interest is related to reading comprehension, which comes at a later stage, so it is vital to encourage parents to read with their children. With that, they actively participate in the strengthening of their children’s language development and listening skills. We can, with this project, reach two groups of four-year-olds in a large area, and we hope that this creates a field for discussion between the parents and an opportunity for encouragement and empowerment for the children,” Óskar said. In the next few weeks, the librarites in East Iceland will invite four-year-old children for a visit with their parents to accept the book as a present. The participating libraries are in Neskaupstadur, Eskifjordur, Vopnafjordur, Reydarfjordur, Fáskrúdsfjordur, Djúpavogur, Seydisfjordur, Stödvarhreppur, Breiddalshreppur and Egilsstadir.
