Playschool children learn about safety

A group of children from Lyngholt playschool in Reydarfjördur presented artwork to Alcoa Fjardaál and learned about safety during their visit to the smelter recently.

Playschool Day has been celebrated on the 6th of February for the past few years on the occasion that the Association of Playschool Teachers was founded on that day in 1950. The visit to Fjardaál was part of that celebration for Lyngholt this year. Children from Lyngholt visited large companies in town and presented them with artwork they had made.

The children who visited Fjardaál were among the playschool's oldest, 4-5 year olds, and were accompanied by four teachers. They brought artwork they had made and hung it up themselves in a corridor in the smelter's office building, where every employee passes daily. Much of the artwork was inspired by a recent visit to a recycling center, where the children had been taught to categorize waste.

At Fjardaál, the children went through a safety induction, like all visitors, and they got to try on safety helmets, safety glasses and earplugs. After the safety induction, each of them got a visitor pass and they hung up their colourful artwork.

When the art exhibition had been set up, the children posed for a group photo and took the elevator to the third floor canteen, where they were served with milk, juice and other refreshments.

Interested in safety

The children were much interested in safety equipment, and wanted to keep the helmets!

A lively group

The children from Lyngholt brightened up the office corridor with life and colour, much appreciated by the Fjardaál staff.
