Alcoa Fjarðaál allocated 14 community grants in April
In April, Alcoa Fjardaál allocated 14 community grants to various projects in East Iceland. The National Meeting of Women’s Choirs which took place in Höfn, Hornafjördur last weekend, was one of the sponsored events.
Other grantees include Sögubrot, a Storytelling Association, which aims to restore the Icelandic storytelling tradition by travelling over East Iceland, telling stories to schoolchildren. Grants were also awarded to the East Iceland Chamber Choir, the Icelandic Association of the Deaf and Blind, and to have a manuscript written for a documentary film on reindeer in East Iceland. Gerpir Resque Squad got a grant for youth recruitment, which will help the squad to establish courses for future rescuers, and another grant for their rescue dog team, which has been trained to locate victims of avalanches. Mjóeyri in Eskifjördur received a grant for culture-related hikes and excursions in Fjardabyggd in June and The Icebergs, a team of youths from Hornafjördur Elementary School, which won the Lego contest in 2007, got a travel grant to participate in a competition in the US this summer. Grants were also awarded to the Nordic Youth Art Camp, held in Eidar this summer, the youth division of Blær Horsemanship Association, the Great Wood Day, the Association of Senior Citizens in Eskifjordur, Leiknir Sports Association for running the Fjardaál Soccer Tournament this spring, and to Eistnaflug, a heavy rock festival in Fjardabyggd. In addition to these grants, Alcoa Fjardaál sponsors most town festivals in East Iceland, including the Hammond Festival held in Djúpivogur in May. The company also sponsors the Video and Film Festival Reindeerland 700IS and the Egilsstadir Jazz Festival. Furthermore, Alcoa Fjardaál recently signed an agreement of sponsorship with the Fjardabyggd Soccer Association. Alcoa Fjardaál community grants are awarded twice a year and the deadline for applications is 10 March and 10 September each year. Applications are available on-line (in Icelandic) on Alcoa.com. It is also possible, for larger projects, to apply to the Alcoa Foundation .
