After extensive community input and environmental studies, Alcoa has received approval and support from Iceland to construct Fjarðaál ("aluminum of the fjords"), a 322,000 metric-ton-per-year aluminum smelter at Reydarfjordur in Eastern Iceland. This project, which has been approved by Althingi, Iceland's parliament, will be the first new primary aluminum facility Alcoa has constructed in 20 years.
The legislation passed by Althingi on March 5, 2003 authorizes a contract between Alcoa and other parties to complete the project. Alcoa's involvement involves construction of the aluminum plant. The project also involves construction of the 500-megawatt Karahnjukar Power Station by the National Power Company and a harbor facility at Mjoeyri by the Fjardabyggd Harbor Fund. There will also be related improvements to roads and other infrastructure improvements in eastern Iceland.
Upon completion, the project will represent one of the largest private-sector investments in Iceland's history and one of the cleanest aluminum production facilities in the world. It will directly employ around 455 people, create many more jobs in supporting industries and service organizations, and help put the economy in eastern Iceland on a more secure foundation. A stronger economy in the region will allow for improvements in transportation, education, healthcare, environmental management, and quality of life.
The proposed Alcoa facility will incorporate lessons and technology developed over the past 20 years to promote sustainability and minimize environmental impact.
