Community Relations
Alcoa Fjardaál is determined to inform the public about its plans and operations because we want the community to be conscious about our values and future developments. The information is communicated in a number of ways: with newsletters, on our homepage, through an active communication with the media, in open community meetings and other organised events. Even more importantly, Alcoa Fjardaál continuously seeks co-operation with the community in planning and designing the operation. Thus, we can take the community’s needs and views into consideration in our decision-making and our work. Furthermore, the co-operation provides us with a positive control for our activities. Sustainability Initiative Alcoa Fjardaál holds sustainable development as a guiding light in the construction and operation of the Reydarfjordur smelter. As this is a brand new project and the smelter is not operative yet, we have the rare and well-appreciated opportunity to monitor and measure the real impact of the operation on the surrounding community. With this opportunity in mind, Alcoa Fjardaál approached Landsvirkjun (The National Power Company of Iceland) in order to establish a joint sustainability initiative, which would measure the impact of the Alcoa and Landsvirkjun’s projects in East-Iceland. The effort would measure environmental, community and economical impact. A number of non-government organisations (NGOs), the church, the government, local authorities and other stakeholders were invited to appoint a representative in an Advisory Group, which would define the issues most important to monitor in the construction period and after operation has begun. Consequently, the Advisory Group worked on designing and prioritising indicators and metrics which will be used for monitoring the impact of the projects.
The group worked together in the period from June 2004 to February 2005. More information about its work, plus updates on the development and monitoring outcomes is available on the Sustainability Initiative website.
Community Collaborative Network Alcoa Fjardaál also initiated a community collaborative group within Fjardabyggd municipality. The group includes representatives from the community and companies responsible for the construction of the smelter, public institutions, community services, employers, associations and individuals. The purpose of the Community Consultative Network is to communicate information about developments in the community and plant operations, and take action if some development seems to be heading in a negative direction.
