The Alcoa Foundation and other resources for community grants
Community responsibility is an important factor in Alcoa’s values. We know that each day of the year, the company and its operations touch the lives of thousands of individuals all over the world: employees, customers, suppliers and partners. Extending our reach, resources and relationships. The future of Alcoa Fjardaál is integrated with the future of the community. Alcoa Fjardaál can support a positive development for the community in a number of ways, including contributions from the Alcoa Foundation. The main purpose of the Alcoa Foundation is to improve the quality of life in Alcoa communities worldwide. With more than $388 million invested since its inception in 1952, the Alcoa Foundation has positioned itself as a source of positive community change and enhancement. Alcoa Fjardaál and the Alcoa Foundation In April, 2007, when the Alcoa Fjardaál smelter has become operative, the company will support community project applications for grants from the Alcoa Foundation. The community projects must fulfill certain conditions in order to qualify, and must follow an outlined grant application process. We give priority consideration to programs and organizations in or near Fjardabyggd, the community where the Alcoa Fjardaál smelter is located.
Until 2007, Alcoa Fjardaál can solicitate applications to the Alcoa Foundation for certain projects that support the infrastructure and basic services in communities near the Alcoa Fjardaál smelter. Alcoa Fjardaál reserves, in all cases, the initiative for these projects. Among the efforts that have received a grant from the Alcoa Foundation through Alcoa Fjardaál is the East-Iceland Health Centre (HSA), which was presented with a grant of US$ 75,000 for the purchase of the latest digital equipment for processing x-rays.
Direct Support for Community-based Initiatives Alcoa Fjardaál also provides direct support for community initiatives in or near Fjardabyggd. In 2005 and 2006, projects are given a priority if they support the infrastructure and sustainable development of the communities in East-Iceland, associated with:
- Environmental issues and the protection of natural resources
- Safety and health of individuals and the community
- The development of supportive services and community infrastructure
- Population increase and reinforcement of the labor market
- Recreational and social opportunities
Support is only granted to charitable, non-profit organizations. We do not donate to individuals or the regular costs of running an organization. Those interested in applying for direct support for a program or effort should send a formal, written application to Alcoa Fjardaál, stating the following: Name of organization, the national registry number of the association (“kennitala”), the official address, and the name, telephone number and e-mail of a contact, a description of the project and an explanation of how it relates to one of the prioritized issues above (1-5), the total estimated cost of the project and the amount requested from Alcoa Fjardaál.
