Failure in landing equipment caused alumina drift

August 24, 2009 A failure occurred in landing equipment when alumina was being unloaded from a carrier in Mjóeyri harbor by the Alcoa Fjardaál smelter on Saturday. Airborne alumina that drifted over the smelter site did not cause any environmental damage.

Three new managers in the Alcoa Fjardaál smelter

August 24, 2009 Three new managers have joined the Alcoa Fjardaál management team. Magnús Thór Ásmundsson is the new Manager of Production Development, Gudný Björg Hauksdóttir Manager of Safety and Health and Jóhann F. Helgason Manager of Reliability. Whereas earlier, three of the company’s twelve managers were women, they are now four.

Average salary highest in East Iceland

July 2, 2009 The number of residents in Fjardabyggd municipality has grown by 19% between the years of 2002 and 2008. The average salary has, during this period, been higher in East Iceland than any other area outside the capital area.

Alcoa not involved in currency speculation

June 30, 2009 Alcoa in Iceland has offered to move all its trade with Icelandic kronas to Iceland. The company has never been involved in any kind of currency speculation with the krona, according to a statement that has been sent to the Icelandic media.

May 18, 2009 The Alcoa Foundation has decided to grant the East Iceland Occupational Rehabilitation Centre with 70,000 US$ over a two-year period. Steinthór Thórdarson, HR Manager of Fjardaál, presented the the first part of the grant, 35,000 US$ to the Centre today.

In October, 2008, Iceland's Minister of Social Affairs presented Tómas Már Sigurdsson, on behalf of Alcoa Fjardaál, with the 2008 Gender Equality Award. The annual award is granted by the Gender Equality Council in Iceland for outstanding work in the field of gender equality.

In June 2007, Alcoa officially opened Fjarðaál ("aluminum of the fjords"), an aluminum smelter at Reydarfjordur in Eastern Iceland. This project is Alcoa's first new primary aluminum facility in 20 years.
