July 1, 2008 Alcoa and Landsvirkjun signed an agreement yesterday on Alcoa supporting the first borehole of the Icelandic Deep Drilling Project, to be drilled at the Krafla caldera in NE Iceland.

Work on the second phase of feasability studies on a possible smelter in Bakki by the town of Húsavík in North Iceland was completed on 31 March 2007. The first phase had been completed in October 2006. The decision was made in April 2007 to continue into the third and last phase.

In June 2007, Alcoa officially opened Fjarðaál ("aluminum of the fjords"), an aluminum smelter at Reydarfjordur in Eastern Iceland. This project is Alcoa's first new primary aluminum facility in 20 years.
