Health & Safety Overview
Zero work-related injuries and illnesses have been long-standing goals for Alcoa. But when zero first became the target, it seemed unreachable; "accidents are inevitable" was often the response.
They're not. We can attain zero. It is possible, and, in many locations, it is already herethanks to dedicated effort and a firm belief that safety is the highest internal priority.
As of Friday, November 20, 2009, 20:45 Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), Alcoa's lost workday rate for 2009 stands at 0.130. Alcoa calculates and publishes this rate in real time. It represents the number of injuries and illnesses resulting in one or more days away from work with or without days of job transfer or restrictions per 100 full-time workers.
In the 12-month period ending October 31, 2009:
|
|
40.1%
of Alcoa's 207 locations worldwide had zero recordable injuries compared to 37.8% one year prior.
|
72.9%
of Alcoa's 207 locations worldwide had zero lost workdays compared to 63.9% one year prior.
|
99.9%
of our employees had zero lost workdays compared to 99.9% one year prior.
|
 |
Working in teams and as individuals, we can build on this outstanding effort—and see zero extended to every Alcoa location, every day.
Note: While the health and safety performance of many Alcoa business units continues to improve during 2009, our total recordable injury rate (TRIR) is likely to increase by approximately 25% due to the June 2009 divestiture of Alcoa Electrical and Electronic Solutions (AEES). AEES was one of Alcoa’s strongest business units with respect to injury/illness prevention, as well as a significant contributor to total hours worked. As a result of the sale, we have adjusted our 2009 Safety Plan accordingly to maintain:
- Zero fatalities;
- A year-end lost workday injury rate of 0.13 or less; and
- A year-end total recordable injury rate of 1.36 or less.
Our 2008 baseline TRIR without the AEES business unit would have been 1.7. The adjusted 2009 TRIR target represents a 20% improvement over this 2008 baseline.
